Aeolus is a late model mk2 Achilles 24 (#562 out of around 600 built) and is in good and sailable condition, with significant ongoing upgrades and maintenance work being done by the current and previous owners. (about £4k spent on upgrades over my ownership).

She is an ideal boat for a first-time owner (as I was) as she is easy to handle, fun to sail with a good turn of speed and very capable – in many ways a perfect small yacht for our local cruising grounds as well as more distant shores if you’re feeling adventurous. Easy to sail single-handed, with lines led back to the cockpit, she has plenty of space for crew as well. Her low freeboard makes mooring and anchoring easy.

She benefits from a new Tohatsu 6hp SailPro (2019) which easily powers her in all conditions, a Crusader biradial furling genoa, modern instruments and has a good interior. There is minimal work for a new owner to do: she is nearly ready for this season, as a minimum antifouling to be applied before she goes back into the water.

I bought her in 2009 and she has been based at Greenwich Yacht Club ever since, being used to participate in club races, plus trips to the Thames Estuary, the Medway, the Swale and Essex and Suffolk rivers as far as Woodbridge. She’s completed the GYC East Coast Cruise on several occasions, both with crew and sailed single-handed. She is safe in challenging conditions.

The Achilles 24 was based on the hull of the Ajax racing dinghy and have a great reputation for sailing performance. They are well made, with thick GRP, good quality fittings and Aeolus has a sound hull and cabin structure. They have been sailed transatlantic (competing back in the day in OSTAR and more recently in AZAB and Jester Challenges) and Roger Taylor’s MingMing II, which he regularly sails on long trips to the Arctic, is another triple-keel Achilles 24. Lots have circumnavigated Britain. There is a good owners Flickr group and a Facebook group for support.

She has full sitting headroom below and can sleep up to four (just) but in practice that would soon be too crowded. Cabin berths are 6’6” long, vee berths in forward cabin with infill to convert to a (small) double.

The engine sits in a well in the cockpit and can be removed and replaced with a plug when sailing. In practice I keep the engine in the well during use, then store it inside in a compartment below the cockpit when on the mooring to protect it. The engine can be turned when in the well to give you superb close quarters manoeuverability, like having a side-thruster.
